SULTANPUR: At least 14 people from Pune suffered injuries after the tourist bus they were travelling in hit a divider and overturned on Prayagraj-Ayodhya highway in Sultanpur district early Wednesday morning.
The incident took place at Tatianagar intersection under Gosaiganj police station area of the district at around 3.30 am on Wednesday.
Superintendent of police, Sultanpur, Somen Barma told TOI that nearly 380 tourists from Pune had reached Varanasi by Ganga-Tapti Express on Tuesday and hired eight tourist buses from Varanasi for journey to Ayodhya.
While on way to Ayodhya, one of the eight buses carrying 40 passengers hit a divider and overturned on Prayagraj-Ayodhya highway.
“At least 14 persons sustained injuries in the incident and were taken to Sultanpur district hospital. Five critically injured persons, identified as Dattowa Kashinath Langeh, Vikas Pandernath, Sunli, Balasaheb and Dattashrey Saheb, were referred to BHU Hospital in Varanasi. Nine others, including three women, were discharged after primary treatment,” the SP said.
One of the passengers, Mahadeva Mahale (68), told TOI: “At least 380 people, most of them elderly and middle-aged, started for UP from Bhosari area of Pune on December 25 night. We had decided to return in a week’s time.” He added that the accident did not deter them from visiting Ayodhya.
Ramesh Shankar (53), another passenger who sustained minor injuries, said, “We all were sleeping and suddenly the bus was upside down. We thought it was an earthquake.”
