KANPUR: Three workers died while six others got critically injured in a fire which broke out in a factory manufacturing cycle cushions and pedals in Gadarian Purwa area of Kanpur’s Fazalganj locality on Friday.
Officials said that the fire spread so fast that fire tenders from several fire stations had to be rushed to douse it. Fire brigade personnel and policemen managed to evacuate six people by breaking the windows and doors.
Around a dozen labourers were working when the fire erupted around 4 am, police said. “Nine workers were trapped. Two among them died at the spot while one died at Lala Lajpat Rai hospital. Six others are undergoing treatment. Many others managed to escape,” said a fire official.
The deceased have been identified as Jai Prakash Singh (50), a resident of Bara Sagwar area in Unnao; Narendra alias Binnu (40), a resident of Sachendi and Pradeep alias Raju Gautam (28), a resident of Chhatarpur in Shivrajpur. The treatment of injured identified as Gaurav and Manoj is going at Lala Lajpat Rai hospital while four others were discharged after the first aid.
Initial probe suggests a short-circuit caused the fire. The exact cause can be ascertained only after investigation, said officials. District Magistrate Vishak G Iyer has asked the official to probe the fire. Chief Fire Officer Deepak Sharma told TOI that the factory was being operated illegally. “Preliminary findings indicated that the fire broke out apparently due to short-circuit. The factory was running without an NOC. Notice will be given to the owner,” CFO added. Police said that the factory, SK Industries, belongs to one Deepak Kataria, a resident of Shastrinagar.
