KANPUR: Six people, including a mother-daughter duo, died and several others injured after a speeding truck rammed into a car and later trampled pedestrians on the Lucknow-Kanpur highway in Unnao district on Sunday evening.
Around four to five people are reported to be trapped in the car that was hit by the truck. The rescue operation is underway with the help of the crane.
On being informed police rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation. Assistant superintendent of police Shashi Shekhar Singh too went to the spot and supervised the rescue operation. The injured have been shifted to nearby hospitals.
The incident took place near Azad Marg crossing under Achalganj police station on Lucknow-Kanpur highway.
According to the information received, a speeding dumper hit a car and bike and later trampled several pedestrians at Azad Marg intersection. The dumper fell into a ditch dragging the four-wheeler.
After the accident, locals blocked the highway. A roadways bus was also vandalized following stone pelting by irate locals of the area. The angry crowd also manhandled a constable who was trying to stop them.
Police officers along with heavy police force reached the spot and restored traffic on the highway.
