DEHRADUN: A 19-year-old boy walked out of jail after spending close to 20 months in prison for “kidnapping” a then minor girl after the court found him innocent of any of the charges slapped against him. He was released on Friday by a Pocso court after the teenage girl returned to her family and said she had gone to Chandigarh on her own without informing anyone. The harrowing experience has left him traumatised and scarred, the boy said on Saturday.
The matter pertains to 2021 when the boy, a resident of Rishikesh, was accused by the girl’s family of abducting her. Her parents lodged a police complaint saying that she had gone missing and her phone was switched off. They further said that the boy was also missing and that they suspected that he might have kidnapped her as his phone was switched off as well.
Police lodged an FIR under IPC sections 363 (kidnapping), 366A (procuration of minor girl) and 376 (rape) and relevant sections of the Pocso Act. According to police, the young man was arrested and sent to jail soon after the FIR was lodged on April 20, 2021. During the trial, the youth told the court that he was not guilty and was being framed.
However, the girl he was accused of “kidnapping” suddenly showed up after a year. The then minor girl (now 18) told the court that she had gone to Chandigarh in April 2021 for further studies without informing her parents, and stayed there with a friend and never contacted her parents.
In her statement in court, she said it was true that she had been in touch with the accused, but had left for Chandigarh on her own.
After being released, the boy said, he “is still reeling from the trauma of being held on false rape and abduction charges and having to spend 19 months in jail”.
