PRAYAGRAJ: In the continuing crackdown on illegal properties of mafia don-turned- politician Atiq Ahmad and his henchmen in the region, the police have compiled fresh records of 58 such illegal assets in Prayagraj, Kaushambi and other districts of the state.
SSP (Prayagraj) Shailesh Kumar Pandey told TOI, “We have compiled fresh records of 58 properties owned by jailed mafia don-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad and his henchmen in indifferent districts and chalked out a strategy to attach them as they have been accumulated through illegal means. We have also compiled inputs about the properties of other gangsters, including Dilip Mishra, in trans- Ganga, trans-Yamuna and an some city pockets.”
The ongoing crackdown against Atiq by joint teams of police, district administration (PDA) and revenue department, especially since 2018, has already resulted in a loss of over Rs 975 crore to him and his henchmen. Prayagraj cops also claimed to have dented the mafia’s economic empire and hit his armoury through attachment, seizure and demolition of properties, suspension or cancellation of over a dozen arm licences in past five years.
Police records here claimed that “while Atiq Ahmad had himself suffered losses of properties worth over Rs 325 crore, either in attachment or demolition so far, his key nine henchmen too have suffered losses of properties worth Rs 650 crore through such action.
The crackdown against Atiq Ahmad and his henchmen is continuing in the state, said a senior police officer, adding that “we have also launched an exercise to find out the properties owned by Atiq Ahmad and his henchmen in neighbouring districts or states. “We have chalked out an elaborate plan to dent their economic empire in other states,” he added.
Till now, cops have attached properties worth over Rs 135 crore of Atiq Ahmad under section 14 (1)of Gangster Act alone at 34 places. Similarly, eight properties owned or constructed by him worth Rs 181 crore have been demolished between 2018 and August 31, 2022. Atiq Ahmad is currently lodged at Sabarmati jail in Gujarat while many of his henchmen were also cooling heels in different UP jails.
Prayagraj police have also attached properties of more than eight henchmen of Atiq Ahmad worth Rs 78.30 crore under the Gangster Act at 47 places so far.
Overall, properties worth a total of Rs 207 crore of Atiq Ahmad and his henchmen have been attached at 78 places till now in Prayargaj and neighbouring Kaushambi district.
Records here revealed that cops had also demolished properties worth Rs 570 crore of the all henchmen of Atiq Ahmad at 32 locations in the past four years. Overall, properties worth Rs 751 crore belonging to Atiq and his henchmen were demolished at 40 spots.
After investigating and compiling documents that expose the wealth accumulated by Atiq Ahmad and his henchmen, cops had attached or demolished properties of Atiq Ahmad and his henchmen in Civil Lines, Mehdauri, Kareli, Lukerganj, Andhawa Crossing Road, Roshan Bagh, Kareli, Chakia, Jhalwa, Puramufti and Chail in past four years. Cops have further chalked out a plan to attach more properties and demolish illegal structures besides initiating their confiscation under the Gangsters Act, the SSP said.
In 2007, police had razed Atiq’s office in Khuldabad area. Moreover, a joint team of police, district administration and Prayagraj Development Authority (PDA) had freed two plots in Lukerganj in 2020 as it was nazul land that had been grabbed by the Atiq gang. Now, as many as 76 flats for needy people are to be constructed on the same land. Interestingly, cops had attached Atiq’s two prime properties worth Rs 100 crore in August 2022 alone. Cops claimed that he had suffered losses of properties worth Rs 310 crore either in attachment or demolition so far.
