LUCKNOW: After a gap of six years, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and his uncle Shivpal Yadav shared a ‘political stage’ in Etawah on Sunday to stake Yadav clan’s claim to patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav’s political legacy.
As they sought support for Dimple Yadav in Mainpuri bypolls, Shivpal called Akhilesh a torchbearer of Mulayam’s principals and dreams that he had left behind for the Yadav clan. The SP chief, too, was unequivocal while claiming that he had only political differences with “chachaji” which had gone now.
In the political circles the development was being seen as Shivpal’s attempt to reiterate his commitment towards Mulayam’s legacy and the Yadav clan and Akhilesh softening his stance over a rapprochement with his uncle.
The Sunday afternoon event at Etawah showcased coming together of Akhilesh and Shivpal Yadav like never before. As Akhilesh arrived at the venue, Shivpal’s son Aditya Yadav welcomed him at the entrance and touched his feet. Thereafter, Akhilesh walked on to the stage and touched Shivpal’s feet to seek his blessings as the crowds cheered. Then Shivpal welcomed Akhilesh with a bouquet of flowers and the SP chief once again sought his Chacha’s blessings.
While addressing the booth workers and party leaders Shivpal referred to the Mainpuri bypoll as an election of “pratishtha” (prestige) and “samman” (honour). Talking about SP patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav, Shivpal said “Netaji” was no more but everyone in Mainpuri had some of his “ansh” (part) in them.
“Aaj Netaji ke abhav mein ye pehla chunav ho raha hai … hum sab mein Netaji ka ansh hain …Netaji ko maine kabhi nirash nahi kiya hai … Netaji jo zimmedari chhor gaye hain hum logon par … ab iska nirvah Akhilesh Yadav ji ko karna hai (This is the first elections in the absence of Mulayam who is no more. But there is the spirit of Netaji in everyone of us. I have done nothing that had ever left Mulayam disheartened. The responsibility that Mulayam Singh has left on us … now Akhilesh Yadav ji has to take care of it),” Shivpal said.
Akhilesh, in his address said people till now used to talk about differences between him and Shivpal. “Kai bar log kehte hain ki bahut dooriyan hai …. Chacha aur Bhatije mein dooriyan nahi theen … rajneeti mein dooriyan theen… mujhe khushi is baat ki hai ki rajneeti ki dooriyan aaj khatam ho gayeen … iske liye main bahut bahut dhanyawad deta hoon.(People always said there were differences ….There were no differences between the uncle and the nephew … the differences were in politics … I am happy that even those differences have ended today, for which I am very thankful),” Akhilesh said.
Political observers are of the view that if all goes well between Akhilesh and Shivpal, possibilities of Chacha and his supporters joining the SP couldn’t be ruled out. Here, experts believe, Shivpal’s son Aditya Yadav – who has recently been appointed as the state president of Pragatisheel Samajwadi Party–Lohia (PSP-L) – can play an important role as he can act as a link to enable regular flow of communication between the two.
The last time Chacha-Batija had shared a political stage was on October 2016 when the two exchanged barbs at a meeting of SP workers at the party headquarters in Lucknow where Mulayam was also present. The event had brought in public for the first time the bitter battle for supremacy in Yadav clan.
