LUCKNOW: The BJP national leadership is learnt to have drawn a consensus on adding some early muscles to its 2024 Lok Sabha campaign in UP.
BJP sources said the party has decided to send its senior functionaries to UP on a frequent basis to begin initial political spadework in the state which sends maximum MPs to Parliament.
On Monday, even as BJP national general secretary (organisation) BL Santhosh reached Lucknow to lay out a formal template of party’s key organisational programmes, speculations were rife about party’s key strategist and Union home minister Amit Shah’s visit to UP in mid-January to assess party’s preparedness on 14 seats which it lost in 2019 Lok Sabha polls. Likewise, party chief JP Nadda, who is expected to get another term of three years after January 20, is expected to camp in UP soon.
“The top leadership presence in UP will certainly give an added propulsion to the party’s early campaign for 2024 Lok Sabha elections,” said a senior BJP leader.
Sources said the high command senses an urgency given the recent developments presaging opposition’s combative stance. Experts point at the changed political climate in UP amid Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav mending fences with his estranged uncle Shivpal Yadav to bolster his party’s image of being BJP’s most potent rival.
BJP sources said the party’s failure in breaching SP bastion of Mainpuri besides losing Khatauli assembly seat to SP ally RLD has prompted the party high command to take corrective measures.
The development also comes at a time when Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra seeks a desperate resurrection of the grand old party at the national level. Rahul has been pitching for better coordination among the opposition parties to take on the BJP — a narrative which is yet to gain any ground in UP, with Akhilesh drawing a close comparison between Congress and the BJP.
UP BJP spokesperson Hero Bajpai said national leadership always tends to keep a close view on UP which, inarguably, is the most important state.
