LUCKNOW: Several artists have demanded the state government to hold grand celebrations on Kathak maestro Pandit Birju Maharaj’s birth anniversary every year at his ancestral home Kalka Bindadin Maharaj Ki Deorhi in city to promote the dance form.
The demand was made during a function on Saturday to mark Maharaj’s birth anniversary. The programme began with cutting of a cake by Maharaj’s younger brother Pt Ram Mohan Maharaj, his sister Rameshwari Devi, Kathak performer Surbhi Singh and former vice chancellor of Bhatkhande Culture University Poornima Pandey.
Several performers and students performed to pay tribute to the maestro. A performance by Pt Anuj Arjun Maharaj and his pupil was also organised during the Sanatkada Festival in remembrance of Maharaj.
