LUCKNOW: Sun played hide and seek throughout the day and the wind chill factor made the city shiver on the first day of the year on Sunday. People woke up to a foggy morning and had to wait for sunlight till late morning hours, while cold waves continued to give chills.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department Lucknow centre, the maximum temperature was recorded at 18 degrees Celsius which was 2.9 degrees below the normal temperatures, while the minimum temperatures were 12 degrees Celsius on Sunday.
According to Met officials, the fog situation in the city is likely to intensify from Monday for a couple of days while cold conditions will continue this week. Officials attributed the drop in day temperatures to frigid northwesterly winds barrelling through the plains and reduced sunshine due to foggy weather.
Also, the increase in wind velocity from two to three km per hour caused a ‘wind chill’; impact which aggravated the cold conditions. “Dense fog is expected in the morning hours while cold conditions will continue on Monday. Maximum and minimum temperatures on Monday will be around 18 and 10 degree Celsius respectively,” said state Met department senior scientist, Mohd Danish.
