LUCKNOW: In the police commissionerate system the commissioner directly reports to the government and he is directly responsible for the law and order. In cases of emergency like riots, the CP takes the call and coordination between the civil administration and police is done away with. Senior officers in the DGP headquarters said that now the police commissioner is overall in-charge.
“The powers of the executive magistrate, such as issuing orders for preventive arrests or imposition of Section 144 CrPC, are vested in him and thus those conducting habitual crime and creating trouble can be booked under Gangsters Act. Also, he can be bound down under the legal provisions in the commissionerate system which was not possible in the dual-system of DM and SSP,” he said.
“Policing in the commissionerate system is officer-oriented policing which is more sensitive towards needs of the people in general and weaker sections of the society in particular,” said SB Shiradkar, CP, Lucknow.
CP GB Nagar Alok Singh said that it is an effort to give people-oriented police service, with integrated command and supervision on crime and law and order.
ADG LO Prashant Kumar said that extensive crackdown has taken place against the mafia and gangsters in commissionerates.
