PRAYAGRAJ: A day after large-scale violence and arson on the Allahabad University campus, two cross-FIRs were lodged by a student leader and security guards till Tuesday afternoon.
The first FIR was lodged at the Colonelganj police station by a former student leader against 30-40 security guards of the university late Monday, while the other was lodged by a university security guard against eight student leaders on Tuesday. “We have registered FIRs from both sides and have started a probe,” said inspector Colonelganj, Ram Mohan Rai. Heavy police force, including RAF, PAC and local police, was deployed on the University campus, which was closed on Tuesday.
Police and district administration held talks with the agitating student leaders, who have given an ultimatum of 48 hours to the police to arrest the ‘guilty’ security guards and lodge an FIR against chief proctor Prof Harsh Kumar in the matter.
More than a dozen AU students were wounded, four bikes torched, cars of teachers damaged and window panes of a building broken with stones in violence that broke out Monday after guards allegedly stopped a former student leader on the campus.
A former student leader, Vivekanand Pathak, had sustained head injury in alleged thrashing by the security guards. Following the incident, Pathak, who is state general secretary of the Congress party, had lodged a complaint with the Colonelganj police on Monday night itself.
Pathak had named three security guards — Prabhakar Singh, MK Pandey and Tara Chandra — in his complaint. The FIR was lodged on his complaint against 30-40 unnamed individuals too. The second FIR was lodged by Prabhakar Singh against eight student leaders including Pathak on Tuesday.
A student leader, Ajay Yadav Samrat, said: “We have given 48 hours to the police to arrest the security guards and we also want that an FIR should be registered against chief proctor prof Harsh Kumar.”
