LUCKNOW: In a targeted campaign against narcotics trade in the state, the UP Police has seized drugs worth Rs 320 crore and arrested 11,452 people after registering 10,460 FIRs between January 1 and November 15, 2022.
Senior police officials said they were also considering transferring cases in which seizure has been around Rs 10-15 crore to the recently constituted Anti-Narcotics Task Force.
UP police have also slapped charges of Gangsters Act against 828 habitual offenders involved in drug trade.
Additional director general of police law and order Prashant Kumar said a sustained and systematic effort is being taken by the government agencies, including the police and the NCB, to curb the sale of drugs. “We have also lodged 256 cases of Gangsters Act and seized property of habitual offenders worth Rs 169 crore,” he said. Kumar also said in the recent time, a huge dent has been inflicted on the drug network by affecting huge seizures and arrest of drug traffickers.
“We have also instructed district police chiefs to monitor cases of NDPS Act on monthly basis and if they see any sort of spike or change then inform the headquarters,” said Kumar.
To crack down on sale of psychotropic substances and expedite cases registered under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, the special Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) has been formed. Narcotics stations have been established in Barabanki and Ghazipur – two UP districts known to be on the map of narco cultivation and trade. The ADG said synthetic narcotics worth about 34,575 kg have been seized by STF while 20,439 kg of synthetic narcotics injections have been seized by the UP police in past one year.
