The FIR against Rai was lodged under sections 354(a), 501 and 509 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) in Sonbhadra district on the complaint of the district chief of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s women’s wing Pushpa Singh on Tuesday.
Rai, who was on a Bharat Jodo Yatra in Sonbhadra district on Monday, had said that she (Irani) only came to her constituency Amethi to show ‘latke-jhatke’ (show off).
Meanwhile, the National Commission for Women (NCW) has also sent a notice to Rai to appear before it on December 28.
However, standing by his remarks, Rai on Tuesday said that he did not use any unparliamentary language.
“Why should I apologise? I did not use any unparliamentary language. Latke-jhatke is our ‘bolchal ki bhasha’ (colloquial language) which means that somebody suddenly appears and says something and then disappears,” said Rai while talking to reporters in Chandauli district, adding that he did not want to insult anyone.
“Latka Jhatka is not an unparliamentary word. Some people are unnecessarily trying to exert pressure. I did not intend to insult anyone with the word Latka-Jhatka, I have always respected women and will do so,” said Rai, adding that Rahul Gandhi will again contest from Amethi.
“The people of Amethi got confused in ‘latke-jhatke’, so they have chosen someone other than Rahul, but now the people of Amethi want Rahul again,” he said.
Congress leader’s sexist remarks against Irani
“We have a fighting spirit, not going to run away”, Rai said, adding that he would challenge Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Varanasi in 2024.
“PM Modi has not done any such work in Varanasi that the public will elect him in 2024. My vote percentage has increased significantly in the last election, so imagine what will happen in 2024”.
Meanwhile, the NCW has taken cognizance of the misogynistic remark made by Rai against the union minister.
The commission has also scheduled a hearing in the matter and sent a notice to Ajay Rai to appear before it on December 28 at 12pm.
On Monday, Rai had said that most of the factories in Amethi were on the verge of closure. Half of the factories in Jagdishpur industrial area are lying shut.
“Smriti Irani only comes, shows ‘latka-jhatka’, and leaves,” said Rai.
His statement evoked a sharp response from Irani.
‘Misogynistic goons need new speechwriter’: Smriti Irani
On Twitter, Irani accused the Congress of misogyny and targeted Rahul Gandhi, whom she had defeated in Amethi in the last parliamentary election. Gandhi is now the MP from Wayanad in Kerala.
सुना है @RahulGandhi जी आपने अपने किसी प्रांतीय नेता से अभद्र तरीके से 2024 में अमेठी से लड़ने की घोषणा करवाई है।… https://t.co/XSZRKM2PEv

“You and Mummy ji need to get your misogynistic (misogynist) goons a new speechwriter,” she said.
She also taunted the former Congress president for losing on home turf Amethi and seeking election from another seat.
Addressing Rahul Gandhi in her tweet, Irani said he had got a regional leader to announce in an “indecent manner” that he is contesting from Amethi.
“So should I take it as certain that you would contest from Amethi? Won’t run away to another seat? Won’t get scared?” she said in Hindi.
