LUCKNOW: There are no permanent friends or foes in politics. Former minister Dharam Singh Saini, a prominent OBC leader who, along with Swami Prasad Maurya, quit the Bharatiya Janata Party just before the 2022 UP elections to join the Samajwadi Party, is making a comeback.
According to highly placed sources, Saini, who lost his traditional Nakur seat to BJP’s Mukesh Chaudhary, will take BJP’s membership in the presence of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath when the latter goes to campaign for the party in Khatauli bypoll on Wednesday.
Yogi is likely to address an election rally in Khatauli on Wednesday in support of BJP candidate Rajkumari Saini, the wife of former MLA Vikram Saini, whose disqualification after his conviction in Muzaffarnagar riot case has led to the bypoll. Saini, an Ayurveda practitioner, had joined the BJP months before 2017 assembly polls after leaving the Bahujan Samaj Party along with Swami Prasad Maurya.
‘Move could’ve positive impact on Dharam Singh Saini voters in Khatauli’
Both he and Maurya were made cabinet ministers in the first cabinet of Yogi Adityanath. However, two months before 2022 assembly elections, Maurya, Saini and six other OBC leaders quit, citing ‘gross neglect’ of backwards, Dalits and farmers. Saini contested from Nakur, the seat he held three times in the past, but lost by just 315 votes to BJP candidate Chaudhary.
Living in political oblivion since then, Saini got in touch with his sympathisers in the BJP. The party think tank was also of the opinion that his inclusion could have a positive impact on Saini voters in Khatauli, say the party insiders. RLD has fielded Madan Bhaiya from the seat. He lost from Loni in Ghaziabad to BJP’s Nand Kishore Gurjar.
