KANPUR: As many as six persons including a woman were arrested near Anwarganj railway station after a human trafficking racket was reportedly busted in Kanpur recently. All accused – identified as Iqbal and Chandni of Etah, Dhanpal, Guddu and Natthu Lal of Budaun and Hari Singh of Shahjahanpur – have been booked under relevant sections of IPC and sent to jail. Further investigation is underway.
According to reports, one of the minor victims hailing from Raipurwa area in city was rescued from Budaun. The gang members arrested by Raipurwa police used to be active at bus stations, railway stations and busy thoroughfares of the city where they used to zero-in on the girls running away from home after fighting with their parents or siblings over one pretext or another.
During interrogation, they confessed to being involved in nearly six cases of human trafficking. The gang has allegedly forced more than six women into prostitution during past several years. The police got a tip off in November after a 14-year-old girl went missing from her house in Raipurwa area. “The girl, who after fighting with her parents fled the house was lured by these gang members including the woman member, on the pretext of help. However, later they took the girl to Budaun and sold her to someone there. They also confessed to abducting girls from Bihar and Shahjahanpur district of the state and later selling in lieu of Rs 50,000 to 60,000,” stated a communique issued by Commissionerate police.
