KANPUR: An elderly couple was strangled to death by unidentified miscreants during a robbery in Fattepur village in Kakwan police station area, late on Thursday night. The miscreants looted cash and jewellery worth around Rs 10 lakh.
On being informed, senior police officers reached the spot in the morning hours of Friday.
Forensic team has also been requisitioned to collect evidence from the spot. During preliminary findings, the police expressed possibility of involvement of someone close to the victims.
Eighty-year-old Chammi Lal used to run a grocery shop and lived with wife Imarti Devi (75), son Rajkumar, and his wife Sapna, two minor grand-sons in Fattepur village. His son Rajkumar worked as a private electrician and also had a tent house business and farming.
On Thursday night, the elderly couple were sleeping in a room adjacent to the grocery shop. Rajkumar had gone to the farm to guard the crop while his wife was sleeping in the room with her two children.
According to Sapna, at around 1:00 am, someone knocked on the doors on the pretext of purchasing groceries. “On opening the door, five masked-armed men barged into the house. The miscreants reached the room of her in-laws where they strangled Chammi Lal and his wife to death. Later one of them pointed pistol at Sapna and asked her to handover the keys and threatened her of killing her husband guarding the field if she denies,” she told investigators.
Meanwhile, a miscreant broke the cupboard. Looted jewellery worth about ten lakhs and cash worth Rs 50,000 kept in the cupboard. Later, the villagers alerted Rajkumar who informed the police.
DCP West Vijay Dhul, ACP Bilhaur Alok Singh reached the spot along with the police force and forensic team.
DCP Vijay Dhul said that the matter is being investigated, soon the miscreants will be arrested and the incident will be worked out.
