LUCKNOW: Hitting out at previous governments for allegedly neglecting the state capital, chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday said the city that had been suffering from sanitation issues, disorder and anarchy has seen complete transformation over the past five years.
Addressing a Prabuddha Jan Sammelan, Yogi said: “Five years back, the state capital was bearing the brunt of the neglect by the previous governments. Even though Lucknow is the state capital, one saw dirt and witnessed chaos and anarchy. After 2017, many of the Centre’s schemes, including the Swachh Bharat Mission, were implemented in UP. A significant improvement in the systematic disposal of urban garbage was made.”
Praising defence minister Rajnath Singh, who is also the MP from Lucknow, the CM said not only is Singh a well-liked leader but also responsible for major development in the city. He said when Atal Bihari Vajpayee was PM, Singh oversaw the construction of the Shaheed Path. The CM went on to say that the state had become a “model” for Covid-19 management and garbage management with cities like Lucknow, Ghaziabad, Varanasi, Aligarh and Agra making it to a nationwide list of the cleanest air. Before 2017, UP cities were among the worst in sanitation.
He referred to the Trinetra or a network of CCTV cameras as a means of improving security. The CM said as per the directions of the Supreme Court to convert cities into ‘safe cities’, UP government had connected all municipal corporations with the smart city mission and was providing them with CCTV cameras. “In today’s UP, one can witness smart cities and smart youth,” he said, referring to the government’s scheme of giving ipads and iphones to youths.
He said “Before 2017, there was no electricity in the cities. Now all has changed and along with continuous power, the drainage and sewerage systems would be properly organized. LED streetlights would illuminate cities. Every home now has a tap, electricity and cooking gas connection,” he added.
The CM further said: “Lucknow will soon receive a world-class convention centre. We have tried to give Lucknow a new identity. Lucknow is both a historical and mythological city. It has had an unforgettable contribution in the freedom movement. Lucknow is now changing. Very soon the BrahMos missiles will be manufactured in Lucknow,” he said.
