LUCKNOW: Air pollution levels spiked to alarming levels in several localities of the city on New Year’s eve. Favourable weather conditions like drop in temperatures and fog didn’t allow pollutants to disperse in the atmosphere and thereby turned the air quality ‘very poor’ in majority areas.
The spike in pollution reduced visibility during evening with environment turning hazy. According to environmentalists, the air quality will deteriorate further in the coming days with fog likely to intensify after January 2.

The condition was worst in Talkatora where Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 385, followed by Lalbagh (378), Aliganj ( 347), Gomtinagar (224) and Kukrail picnic spot (208) during evening hours.
“The city is struggling with high pollution due to drop in day temperatures and low wind speed that does not allow pollutants to suspend in the atmosphere and now fog will make the situation worse,” said environmentalist Venkatesh Dutta. He said if immediate measures are not taken, AQI could reach hazardous levels of 400 in coming days.
