LUCKNOW: Two people employed for a Smart City project at Papermill Trisection in Nishatganj were crushed to death by a speeding SUV in the wee hours of Thursday. Later in the afternoon, family members of the victims blocked the main road demanding action in the case, leading to traffic congestion for three hours on Nishatganj-Hazratganj route.
According to police, the accident occurred around 2am. After hitting the victims, the SUV driver drove towards Mahanagar crossing where it crashed into the divider. He left the vehicle and fled. The SUV appeared to be brand new and had no registration number.
The deceased, identified as Surendra Kumar (25) of Nishatganj and Sandeep of Rae Bareli, were daily wagersand hired for tiling of the road. While Sandeep was thrown into the air after being hit and landed on the road, the SUV dragged Kumar for about 20 metres.
Other workers informed UP112 and police took the injured to the SPM Civil Hospital where they were declared brought dead. On Thursday afternoon, kin of Kumar and other workers started protesting in Nishatganj by keeping the body in the middle of the road le-ading to a traffic jam. Police had to divert the traffic from Nishatganj. However, vehicles kept on crawling till 6pm.
The protesters demanded Rs 25 lakh compensation for the victim’s family. Kumar is survived by his wife and two kids. Later, protestors withdrew agitation after police assured action. ACP Mahanagar, Jaya Shandilya said an FIR for rash driving and causing death by negligence has been lodged.
