NEW DELHI: Samajwadi Party (SP) candidate Dimple Yadav (1,19,500 votes) has managed to get a huge lead of over 60,000 votes against her nearest rival Raghuraj Singh Shakya (58,650 votes) of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as the counting of votes progressed for bypolls to the Mainpuri Lok Sabha seat.
Voting for Mainpuri Lok Sabha seat was held on December 5.
Mainpuri Lok Sabha bypoll was necessitated after the death of SP Patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav on October 10 this year.
Dimple, the wife of SP national president Akhilesh Yadav, Mulayam’s ‘badi bahu’, has been an MP from Kannauj twice in the past.
Dimple became an MP for the first time in 2012 when she got elected unopposed from Kannauj, the seat vacated by her husband Akhilesh after taking over as the UP CM. She retained the seat in 2014, but lost to BJP’s Subrat Pathak in 2019 LS polls.
Mainpuri, with 7 lakh Yadavs (45% of the total electorate), has traditionally been with the SP ever since party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav bagged the seat for the first time in 1996. Mulayam won the seat five times out of hsi seven tenures as an MP. He retained the seats in 2014 and 2019, when a saffron wave made most of the party candidates lose.
