LUCKNOW: It came as a shock for Shruti (name changed) of Bihar who learned from social media and news portals that her ‘soon-to-be’ husband Sanjay Singh was arrested in Lucknow’s Aashiana.
The distraught woman travelled about 500 km to know the truth and was aghast to find two other women from districts of Gorakhpur, Sitapur who also reached the police station to enquire about Singh as they were soon to be married to him.
Sanjay Singh, 38, aliases Hariom Dubey/Shekhar/Vilasrao, who married a woman by making a fake profile on a matrimonial site and had fled with the car and jewellery just 26 days after their wedding in December 2021, was arrested by Aashiana police on Monday. Sanjay is married and has a child.
DCP, East Zone, Prachi Singh said, “Soon after the arrest, we started getting calls from the women enquiring about him. On Tuesday morning, a woman from Bihar along with five others from different districts in the state reached the police station to lodge a complaint against the accused.” “We will be converting all the complaints and adding in the registered FIR against Sanjay,” said the DCP.
Shruti told police that Sanjay had posed himself as Shekhar and floated an ad on a matrimonial site claiming to be a dentist and claimed himself to be an orphan.
“The cards of our wedding to be held next month were printed and distributed. We never thought that he would inveigle us. I spent a lot on him,” she said. He used to boast about his links with popular people and also told of having great wealth, she alleged.
Similarly, another woman from Gorakhpur said that Sanjay posed as a government officer and even though she was ready to give a hefty dowry, she suddenly woke up to find him arrested.
DCP Singh said that they were collecting all the details of such women who were duped by Sanjay Singh.
“We are also conducting a probe from the matrimonial sites to extract more details,” she said.
