VARANASI: In less than 24 hours of a brutal killing of an eight-year-old girl after rape and sodomy, UP’s Bhadohi Police arrested the accused following exchange of fire.
Nimbulal Banvasi alias Phoolchand suffered bullet injuries in leg near Lathia canal culvert of the same district on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday.
“Police teams got inputs regarding movement of Phoolchand in Lathia village under the limits of Bhadohi Kotwali police station after Thursday midnight. Policemen, led by Bhadohi inspector, cordoned the village and started patrolling even as the accused tried to escape by crossing the culvert of the local canal,” Bhadohi superintendent of police Anil Kumar said.
When police cautioned him to stop, Phoolchand opened fire on the cops and tried to escape, Kumar said, adding, when police also opened fire in defence, Phoolchand suffered bullet injuries in leg around 2.30am and fell on ground.
Police rushed him to hospital, where his condition was stable, Kumar said, adding, apart from a country-made revolver, live cartridges were also recovered from him.
Earlier, on Thursday morning, locals noticed the body of a minor girl dumped in bushes near a pond in Mukundipur Bahutara area under the limits of Chauri police station of Bhadohi district.
On getting information police lodged a murder case and sent the body for post-mortem.
During postmortem it became clear that the minor was not only raped but had also been sodomised.
The SP said that on the basis of postmortem report, a case under sections 376a (b) (rape on woman under 12 years in age) and 377 (carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man or woman) of the IPC and 5/6 of the POCSO were included in the FIR.
He said that a cash reward of Rs 25,000 was announced for the arrest of the accused.
