AGRA: Mathura administration and police are on high alert following the Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha’s (ABHM) threat to recite the Hanuman Chalisa on December 6 at the Shahi Idgah mosque. ABHM in a statement recently said that the mosque complex is the “actual birthplace” of lord Krishna.
On Monday, over 1,200 security personnel were deployed near the mosque and Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi temple, which is adjacent to it. Police force was also stationed at houses of over a dozen ABHM workers and local leaders associated with the Muslim community. For security purposes, the city has been divided into two “super-zones, four zones and eight sectors”. Additional police force has been called from Agra, Aligarh, Mainpuri and Firozabad districts. Police also carried out a flag march in sensitive areas of the city. Vehicular movement has been prohibited in the city, officials said.
“No permission was sought for any such event (the ABHM’s programme of doing the Hanuman puja at the mosque) by any organisation. Required security arrangements have been made and no one will be allowed to disrupt law and order. Stringent action will be taken against those who attempt to do so,” said SSP (Mathura) Shailesh Kumar Pandey.
ABHM’s national treasurer Dinesh Sharma said, “A letter has been sent to chief minister Yogi Adityanath in this regard. We will go as per the predetermined programme and don’t need any police permission to worship. I will be on the spot at 12 noon on December 6.”
On Sunday evening, police detained the state spokesperson of ABHM, Sanjay Jat. Earlier, about three dozen people were bound by notices not to cause commotion and maintain peace. Warrants were issued against 16 people who didn’t respond to the notices. Two FIRs were also registered against ABHM leaders for provocative speeches and CrPC section 144 (prohibition on public gatherings) was imposed in the district last week.
At present, a dozen cases on the Krishna Janmabhoomi issue are pending in city courts. The area is guarded by the CRPF and considered a “disputed site”.
