PRAYAGRAJ: Mau MLA Abbas Ansari, who’s the son of jailed mafia-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari, was remanded in 14-day judicial custody by the sessions court here on Friday and sent to jail in connection with a money laundering case.
On Friday, Abbas was produced before the sessions court by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), Prayagraj unit. While fixing December 1 as the next date, sessions judge Santosh Rai said that it is an economic offence, hence the judicial custody is necessary in this case. He also directed that Abbas will again be produced before the court on the next date.
Abbas is accused in a money laundering case and has been booked under Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). He was arrested by ED on November 4 and remained in its custody for 14 days following a court order.
The Prayagraj sessions court had on November 5 sent him in seven days custody remand of ED, which was later extended for seven more days. The ED had sought his custody so that some important information could be gathered from him. At one stage, Abbas was questioned at ED’s Prayagraj office on November 4 for over nine hours and then arrested in connection with the money laundering case registered against his father Mukhtar in March 2021. Earlier, the ED had attached seven properties and assets worth Rs 1.48 crore of Mukhtar.
According to district government counsel, Gulab Chandra Agrahri, Abbas was produced by the ED before the sessions court at Prayagraj on Friday after expiry of ED’s remand period. Sessions court, while taking into consideration the seriousness of the offence, remanded him in judicial custody for 14 days.
