KANPUR: A 33-year-old Merchant Navy engineer died after the car in which he was travelling to Auraiya from Jalaun fell into the Yamuna river at Shergarh Ghat in Auraiya on Friday night, reports Faiz Siddiqui.
Police said that dense fog appeared to be the cause of the accident. SP, Auraiya, Charu Nigam said, “The incident took place at around 11pm on Friday. The car broke the railing of the bridge and fell into Yamuna at Shergarh Ghat. Some passersby reported it to the police.”
Kotwali police station personnel and an SDRF team reached the spot and launched a rescue operation with the help of local divers. A crane was used to pull the car out at around 1am.”
The deceased was identified as Karan Sehgal, son of Sanjay Sehgal and resident of Raj Nagar, Ghaziabad, on the basis of Aadhaar card and registration number plate, said the SP, adding that “the family members of the deceased were informed.”
The official said that a pair of shoes was found in the car. “The police are checking if there was someone else with him in the car,” said the SP.
Sehgal was posted as a second engineer in the Merchant Navy, the SP said. “He was on leave since September 21, 2022 and had left home saying that he was going for an outing. His family members said he had told them on Friday that he was on his way back home from Kullu Manali. Information is being sought on how he reached the Yamuna bridge in Auraiya,” said the SP.
