DEHRADUN: Two days after murdered 19-year-old Ankita Bhandari’s parents held a sit-in accusing police of “erasing crucial evidence to save the accused”, the parents of missing Agniveer aspirant Kedar Bhandari held a similar protest in Dehradun on Thursday accusing police of “trying to push the case under the carpet”.
A resident of Uttarkashi, 19-year-old Kedar on August 18 left his home to participate in an Agniveer recruitment rally conducted by Army in Kotdwar on August 20. He last talked to his parents on August 21. A day later, his parents received a call from Lakshman Jhula police, saying their son had stolen money from an ashram’s donation box and jumped into the Ganga while fleeing from police custody. Since then, he has been traceless.
Kedar’s father Lakshman Bhandari said, “My son has been missing for over three months. We don’t even know whether he is alive or dead. Despite several requests, police are unable to answer our questions. It seems police are pushing the case under the carpet to save the accused among them.”
“They (police) had earlier claimed that Kedar was arrested in a theft case, but when asked to give a copy of the FIR, they failed. Police didn’t do anything to find our son, but the court acted on our petition and directed an FIR to be filed against the accused cops.”
Former SHO of Lakshman Jhula police station Santosh Singh Kunwar and in charge of Tapovan police check post Ashish Sharma were booked for “wrongfully confining” Kedar under relevant sections of the IPC.
DC Dhaundiyal, circle officer of Rishikesh, who is probing the case registered against the two cops, told TOI, “I have received the case diary yesterday (Wednesday) from CO Srinagar. The probe will be done covering all the aspects.”
Meanwhile, Congress members led by party state chief Karan Mahara joined Keadar’s family at the protest to express solidarity.
“Kedar’s sudden arrest and mysterious disappearance have left behind several unanswered questions…the Ankita Bhandari and Kedar cases are a major blot on the police department,” Mahara alleged.
