Varanasi police on Monday gunned down two fugitives from Bihar who had attacked a police sub-inspector in the city on November 8. The two had also killed five persons while committing three bank robberies before they landed in Bihar jail and later escaped from police custody. Police Commissioner A Satish Ganesh, who personally supervised the police action for tracking the robbers who shot at Ajay Yadav and eventually ended up in the encounter of Rajneesh and Manish, said the two happen to be brothers.
“Two young officers, sub-inspectors Brijesh Mishra and Rajkumar Pandey, were tasked with identifying and tracking down those who targeted SI Ajay Yadav and robbed him of his service revolver. The two worked day and night and finally the operation ended in this encounter,” he told TOI on Monday. “To acknowledge their achievement and encourage young police officers to perform their duties diligently, both have been made in charge of two police stations in Varanasi,” he said. Giving details of the encounter, he said the police teams were after the three suspects involved in attacking SI Ajay Yadav. “We had the information that the three were moving around in Varanasi since the incident and used to slip off the police radar every now and then.
Finally, we got a tip-off regarding some suspicious movement of suspected criminals in the Baragaon area and tried to intercept three people at a point. The three opened fire at the police and in the retaliatory firing, two were injured while their associate managed to escape,” the CP said. The injured were rushed to the hospital where they succumbed during treatment, police said. On the basis of information gathered, their photographs were sent to Samastipur SP for identification and it was established that they were wanted gangsters Rajneesh and Manish, police added.
