DEHRADUN: The Uttarakhand health department is presently facing a tough time tracing 109 doctors, who have been reported “missing from duty” since the past few years. The doctors continue to be in the records, but are not present in hospitals.
It is alleged that these doctors have not shared any information about their whereabouts with the authorities concerned for several years. The department has therefore decided to terminate and blacklist them. The move implies that the doctors will be unable to join the health department in future or be hired as government employees.
Some of the medicos were hired almost a decade ago. However, it is alleged that they failed to either report on duty or left after a few months.
“We have given showcause notice to the 109 doctors. Their services will soon be terminated and they will be considered blacklisted by the department,” said Dr AM Johri, joint director (admin), health department.
Some of the doctors had studied in state government medical colleges utilising the government’s bond scheme wherein they had committed to serving the state for a span of 2 to 3 years in lieu of the concessions in their academic fee. However, they failed to stick to the conditions of the bond.
One of the serving doctors at the directorate of health told TOI, “Some of these doctors, after seeing better opportunities elsewhere, switched jobs without taking clearance from the health department.”
Another doctor added, “It is shocking to see that the doctors, without clearing their dues at the health department, simply switched to private practice. These are service rule violations and it is important that strict action is taken against them.”
Incidentally, secretary of health department, R Rajesh Kumar, during a presentation at the brainstorming session of the state government in Mussoorie on Wednesday, also flagged the issue and said that proper mapping of doctors to the community health centres and primary health centres needs to be done on priority.
