The incident took place on Tuesday morning at Mahpur railway station of Ghazipur district.
According to railways, it was the alert train guard Rajesh Kumar Upadhaya of Prayagraj Rambag – Mau MEMU express, who saw the victim and immediately applied the emergency brake to prevent train run over the victim, after which the platform was hammered down.

Video of the incident has now gone viral on the web, in which a man is seen breaking the concrete of the platform’s edge while the victim pleads with rescuers to save him.
Speaking to TOI, Ashok Kumar, the public relation officer of Varanasi division of NER said, “Passenger was attempting to board a running MEMU and lost his balance before falling into a narrow gap between platform and train. He was immediately spotted by train guard Rajesh Kumar Upadhaya, who applied emergency brakes and called for help.”
“At the time of the incident, a group of laborers were laying a rail track next to the train. One of the workers with an iron bar hammered down the platform’s edge and passenger was rescued. He was sent to the local hospital for minor injuries which he sustained during the mishap,” said PRO.
