PRAYAGRAJ: In a heartwarming example of courage and perseverance, an 18-year-old Dalit boy, whose widowed mother works as a farm labourer, has cracked JEE Mains exainations in his first attempt. He recently got admission in the Computer Science branch of Institute of Engineering & Rural Technology (IERT) Prayagraj, on the basis of his JEE Mains rank.
Dhiraj Kumar lost his father in childhood and his mother works in fields for survival. Dhiraj left his native house in Harbhanpur (Phulpur) village about four years ago to pursue his studies from class 9 to 12 in Sangam city.
Dhiraj gives the credit for his success to his class teacher in the village school and Shuruaat – Ek Jyoti Shiksha, a facility run by one Abhishek Shukla to help economically backward students to pursue their studies.
After assessing Dhiraj’s ability and sharp mind, his primary teacher in his Phulpur village managed to get him enrolled in class IX at Government Inter College, Prayagraj where he secured 84% and 75% in class 10 and 12 respectively.
Shukla, the head of the Shuruaat organization, meanwhile spotted him and took all his financial responsibilities. He arranged both his college and coaching fees. Dhiraj initially lived in a small room with other children at Hari Nagar slums and cleared the test amid distractions.
“He initially had to stay in Hari Nagar slums but later got a seat in a GIC hostel. As we were aware of his hard work and determination, we ourselves arranged his coaching and he has finally come out with desired results.”
“Proper guidance and practice and more importantly the faith reposed in me by my teachers helped me achieve this feat,” Dhiraj, said adding “I did not let myself get distracted by my difficulties and financial constraints.”
After he cracked the JEE Mains, he faced the fee challenge to get the admission. Shukla and other good Samaritans then collected funds to the tune of Rs 63,000 to deposit fees and other charges to get him a seat in IERT. “He would be getting a scholarship after six months of admission,” said Shukla.
