BAREILLY: Pandit KK Shankdhar, a priest of Agastya Muni ashram in Bareilly, who has been solemnising interfaith marriages- he has performed 64 weddings of Muslim women with Hindu men in the past six years, 20 of such marriages this year itself- met Bareilly senior superintendent of police (SSP) on Wednesday and sought security, claiming that he is getting threat calls to kill him.
Shankdhar said, “I was stopped by a few youths near a shrine a day before CM Yogi Adityanath’s visit to Bareilly earlier this month but I managed to escape.”
The priest claimed that since the past few days, he has been “receiving calls from private numbers where the callers are threatening to behead me.”
“I am suspecting an attack on me anytime and, hence, sought security from police,” he said.
Shankdhar said he was being targeted since he performs “rituals for non-Hindu women marrying Hindu men and helps them convert their religion before marriage.”
Speaking on the matter, SSP Akhilesh Chaurasia said, “I have forwarded Shankdhar’s application to the circle officer of the local intelligence unit and asked them to provide a report on it. The decision to give security to him will be taken on the basis of their report.”
