LUCKNOW: The three-year term of the Lucknow University (LU) vice-chancellor (VC) Prof AK Rai ended on Thursday, but there was no official announcement from the Raj Bhawan about the new incumbent or his extension till a permanent appointment is made.
Speculation was rife amid academic circles that Prof Rai can be given an extension on Friday till Raj Bhawan makes the final choice as to who will be the new LU VC and
some LU teachers and employees started congratulating Prof Rai on social media anticipating that he will get at least a three-month extension. However, there was no official confirmation from the Raj Bhawan.
The governor, who is also chancellor of the state universities, appoints VCs. The chancellor office constitutes a three member search committee comprising a member each nominated by governor, university’s executive council and chief justice of the high court. The search committee recommends 3-5 names to the chancellor from whom she/he appoints one.
However, in LU’s case delay occurred because Prof Vinay Kumar Pathak who was nominated by the governor earlier had to be replaced after an FIR on corruption charges was lodged against him by the STF.
“Its a sensitive issue and Raj Bhawan does not want to rush into things. The new search committee has interacted with several candidates and the process is expected to be complete on Friday, but before making the final announcement governor/chancellor Anandiben Patel will scrutinise every name recommended to her. The final decision may take a few more days and till then Prof Rai can get an extension. The final order will be issued on Friday,” said a senior official in the governor house.
