PRAYAGRAJ: Police have severely dented the economic empire of mafia-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad. In sustained action, a loss of over Rs 278 crore has been caused to the don and his family members in the past one year.
Cops on Friday claimed to have attached properties of ex-MP and his family members including younger brother worth Rs 278 crore under the Gangster Act in at least 10 cases in the past one year.
Remarkably, the biggest property attachment exercise was carried out by cops on Wednesday when they had attached two prime properties owned by Atiq in the name of his father and uncle at village Havelia worth Rs 123 crore.
On Friday itself, cops again attached Atiq’s property worth Rs 6.60 crore in Kasari Masari area under the Khuldabad police station.
Senior cops claimed that apart from these recent property attachments, police have also compiled enough details and inputs about 40 more properties either owned by Atiq and his family members or henchmen across the country. Senior superintendent of police (Prayagraj) Shailesh Kumar Pandey told TOI, “The crackdown against jailed mafia don-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad’s properties accumulated through illegal means is continuing. We have attached properties owned by Atiq and his family members worth Rs 287 crore accumulated through illegal means in the past one year alone.”
Till now, police have attached properties of Atiq and his family members worth over Rs 320 crore since the beginning of the drive. Moreover, joint teams of police, administration and revenue department have demolished a total of eight properties owned or constructed by Atiq or his family members worth Rs 181 core. The SSP claimed that action against Atiq and his henchmen to check organized crime will go on against all the men on radar.
Records of district police claimed that properties worth Rs 342 crore of gangsters, including Atiq, Muzaffar and others were attached under the Gangster Act in the past one year.
“After investigating and compiling documents that expose the illegal wealth accumulated by Atiq and his henchmen in Civil Lines, Mehdauri, Kareli, Khuldabad, Lukerganj, Andhawa Crossing road, Roshan Bagh, Kareli, Chakia, Jhalwa, Havelia, Kasari Masari and Puramufti, police have further chalked out a plan to attach properties under Gangsters Act,” the SSP said.
