AGRA: A joint team of Mathura police, special task force and forest department busted an inter-state red sandalwood smuggling gang and confiscated 563 kg of logs costing over Rs 1 crore, police said.
According to police, seven people, in the age group 25 to 45, who are part of the gang operating from Andhra Pradesh were arrested from an isolated area around Goverdhan Road under jurisdiction of Highway police station in Mathura and were sent to jail on Tuesday following court orders. Police said the gang leader, identified as Sumit Das (30), is an MBA pass out and a resident of Kanker district in Chhattisgarh.
A senior STF officer said, “During interrogation, the accused confessed they were fascinated by ‘Pushpa’ movie. The gang used to smuggle consignments to different states and around religious sites in Mathura as well.”
