LUCKNOW: A day after Mulayam Singh Yadav was conferred with Padma Vibhushan award (posthumously), party leaders including Shivpal Yadav and Mainpuri MP Dimple Yadav demanded Bharat Ratna – the highest civilian honour of the country – for the Samajwadi Party founder.
Some party leaders went on to describe that the Centre’s decision to award Mulayam with Padma Vibhushan was like making a mockery of a leader of Mulayam’s stature.
“In my view, he should be awarded Bharat Ratna. In fact, he should have already been conferred with the highest civilian honour by now,” Mainpuri MP Dimple Yadav said. Dimple contested the Mainpuri Lok Sabha bypoll necessitated by Mulayam’s demise and won the seat by a record margin. “Party will appeal to the government to announce Bharat Ratna for Netaji (Mulayam),” she said.
Mulayam’s younger brother Shivpal Yadav echoed similar sentiments. “I call upon the government at the Centre to announce Bharat Ratna for a socialist leader like him (Mulayam),” Shivpal told the media on Thursday.
SP MLC Swami Prasad Maurya, who recently made headlines for his comments on Tulsidas’s Ramcharitmanas, said conferring the SP patriarch with a Padma Vibhushan was akin to “making a mockery” of his stature, achievements, and contribution towards the country. “If an award had to be given to Mulayam Singh, it should be no less than the Bharat Ratna,” he said.
IP Singh, another senior leader of the SP, had written a letter to the President of India in October, soon after Yadav’s demise, requesting her to announce Bharat Ratna for Mulayam Singh Yadav while listing his contributions towards social justice.
