LUCKNOW: While the cold conditions as witnessed on Thursday would continue in the state till weekend, brace for chilly and foggy weather in the first week of the new year as icy winds from the snow fed mountains are expected to lash the entire northwestern plains.
On Thursday, Muzaffarnagar and Ayodhya were the coldest in the state with both the districts recording minimum temperature 5 degrees Celsius followed by Shahajanahpur and Bareilly with 5.2 degrees Celsius, Sultanpur 5.5 degrees Celsius and Kanpur City 5.8 degrees Celsius.
The west UP areas experienced more cold and dense fog in comparison to the east because of their proximity to hill areas. In Lucknow, moderate fog prevailed in the morning with visibility below 100 metres, which although cleared by noon, the sky remained hazy all day.
The maximum temperature was 20.8 degrees Celsius, 1.3 units below normal, and the minimum temperature was 7.4 degrees Celsius, 0.5 notches below normal.
On Friday, maximum and minimum temperatures in the city are expected to be 21 and 8 degrees Celsius respectively with moderate to dense fog in the morning hours. Similar conditions would prevail till January 1. The cold conditions are expected to intensify in the West UP from the new year and in the East from January 2-3.
“At present, a western disturbance (WD) is hovering over the Himalayan region leading to snow and rains in the hill areas. The WD, however, has cut off the flow of the chilly winds towards UP. As a result, weather will remain stable in the state for the next 2-3 days,” said Mohammad Danish, senior scientist at the state met department.
