AGRA: Six members of a family, including three children, were killed and three others sustained injuries after a fire broke out in their electronics-cum-furniture shop on the ground floor of the building they lived in at Uttar Pradesh’s Firozabad district. The incident took place late Tuesday night in Padham town.
According to police, a short circuit led to the fire which gutted the shop and the owner’s house on the first floor. SSP (Firozabad) Ashish Tiwari said, “Eighteen fire engines were rushed to the site that took about three hours to douse the flames. Since the area is congested, we had to put in extra effort. Primary investigation has revealed that a short circuit in the undercharging inverter batteries kept in the basement of the house led to the fire. The exact cause is yet to be ascertained.”
The victims have been identified as Manoj Kumar (36), his wife Neeraj (33), their sons Bharat (15) and Harshvardhan (13). Manoj’s younger brother Nitin used to live on the second floor of the house. His wife Shivani (22) and their three-month-old daughter Tejasvi also died in the accident, district magistrate Ravi Ranjan said on Wednesday.
According to neighbours, the fire broke out after a battery explosion in the basement of their furniture-cum-electronic shop quickly spread. While three members of the family escaped after the fire started and were rushed to hospital, the others got trapped. Manoj had in fact taken his daughter, 8, to a doctor as she was unwell. On his return, he found his house in flames. He left the child outside and went in to save the others. Later, his charred body was recovered by police along with those of five other family members.
UP CM Yogi Adityanath expressed grief over the loss of lives and directed officials to provide relief of Rs 2 lakh to the kin of the dead.
