LUCKNOW: While his highpitched electioneering in Gujarat has been hogging much limelight, CM Yogi Adityanath, back home, has been carrying out a subtle campaign for the state’s upcoming Urban Local Bodies (ULB) polls.
Over the past few days, Yogi has visited various cities to address a series of ‘Prabuddh Varg Sammelan’ besides inaugurating/laying the foundation stone of a host of civic projects. The ‘Prabudh Varg Sammelan’ is the party’s drive aimed at reaching out to the intellectual class ahead of any election. The projects which Yogi has been unveiling, too, are essentially those related to the urban infrastructure.
The BJP sources point out that Yogi has already touched Saharanpur, Ghaziabad, Jhansi and Prayagraj. He is scheduled to reach Ayodhya on November 27 and Meerut on November 30. A few more cities are expected to be visited by the CM before the model code of conduct (MCC) for ULB elections comes into effect – expectedlyin the second week of December. The MCC will restrict the state government from announcing any new public measure.
BJP’s Ayodhya (mahanagar) president Abhishek Mishra confirmed that the party was gearing up for Yogi’s programme. He said party workers from not only Ayodhya municipal corporation and Rudauli Nagar Palika Parishad but also from the three newly formed Nagar Panchayats – Suchitaganj, Kamakhya and Kumarganj – have been asked to reach the city on the day. They will be besides the party workers from Nagar Panchayats like Bikapur, Badarsa and Gosainganj.
Mishra also confirmed that the programme will primarily focus on projects and schemes related to urban development. He is expected to hand over possession of houses to the selected few beneficiaries of PM Awas Yojana (urban).
Yogi is scheduled to address a large gathering of intellectuals in Meerut’s Victoria Park on November 30. BJP sources said the projects which have either been fully or at least 95% completed will be taken up in the programme. Reports said that the CM is expected to inaugurate/lay the foundation of projects worth Rs 550 crore in Meerut. The Meerut municipal corporation had slipped out of BJP’s hand to go in BSP’s kitty in the 2017 ULB polls.
UP BJP spokesperson Hero Bajpai said Yogi’s programmes were certainly linked to the forthcoming civic bodies elections. He said the CM is reaching out to the intellectual class which forms a sizable chunk of the population living in the urban areas.
The BJP, experts said, would attempt to sweep the ULB elections to send out a larger message of its political dominance vis-a-vis regional outfits like the SP and BSP. In the last ULB polls, BJP had won 14 municipal corporations while two – Meerut and Aligarh – were won by BSP. This time, there are 17 municipal corporations, Shahjahanpur being the latest addition.
