KANPUR: A student of class V at Basic Primary (Government) School in Prem Nagar area of Kanpur was injured when a school instructor picked up a drilling machine and decided to ‘punish’ him for not being able to recite a mathematics table.
The incident took place on Thursday and came to light on Friday when the parents of the student staged a protest outside the school.
The basic education officer (BSA) reached the spot and removed the instructor, identified as Anuj Pandey. The BSA Surjit Kumar Singh formed a three-member committee to probe the incident.
Reports said that the accused instructor was overseeing some repair work at the school library when he found a student passing by and asked him to recite the table of 2. When the boy failed to do so, the instructor picked up the power-operated hand drill and ended up injuring the minor boy.
The instructor was not an employee of the school and engaged by the education department to supervise the repair work in the school library.
The student told reporters that Anuj asked him to recite the table, and when he could not recite it he operated a drill machine in his left hand. “Then a fellow student standing nearby removed the plug of the drill machine, but by then I was injured,” he added.
Initial reports said the accused instructor was only threatening the student when he accidently pressed the start button of the drill that was plugged in. While he tried to pull the drill back, another student had disconnected the machine from the switchboard. But by then the drill had caused superficial injuries on the boy’s hand and palm.
The BSA said “The instructor is being removed from the school, besides recommendations have been made to terminate him from services. Along with this, a three-member committee has been formed to see if the incident was an accident or was aimed at hurting the minor boy.”
He said the panel will also look into other aspects like the circumstances under which children were permitted by their teachers to go to the library where repair work was underway.
After the student suffered injuries, the school teachers gave him minor treatment and sent him home. The teachers, however, allegedly did not bring the incident to the knowledge of seniors.
When the child reached home and told his parents about the ordeal, on Friday they reached the school along with him and staged a massive protest demanding strict action against the instructor. They also alleged that the teachers did not inform their superiors about the incident nor did they provide proper treatment wherein tetanus injection was to be given.
