VARANASI: Customs officials on Saturday detained two passengers at Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport here and recovered 521 grams of ‘smuggled’ gold worth Rs 28 lakh, 11 iPhones and two smartwatches from their possession.
However, the passengers were later released after questioning. According to reports, Mohammad Kalim, a resident of Sarnath and Mohammad Navi of Muzaffarnagar in Bihar landed at the airport from Sharjah by Air India Express IX-184. On a tip-off, a team of Customs department frisked both the passengers at the airport.
During the search, 521 gram gold was recovered from the bag of Mohammad Navi while 11 iPhones and two smart watches worth Rs 12 lakh were recovered from Mohammad Kalim’s bag. However, the two failed to produce documents in support of possession of the valued items.
The officials said names, addresses and details of both the passengers were recorded. As per the new rule, a passenger coming from abroad is booked and produced before court, if the items recovered from him/her is worth over Rs 50 lakh.
“Since value of the seized items was below Rs 50 lakh in this case, the two passengers were released after questioning,” said an official.
